Graffiti and mural art tour, in Bucharest

If you are already familiar with Bucharest, have seen the city center, and visited the main points of interest recommended by tourist guides, it is time to discover its more hidden side, such as the narrow streets behind the big boulevards, and not just any old way, but through the lens of street art.

In order to discuss the murals that bring color to the neighborhoods, a first introduction to the topic will consist of understanding the phenomenon of graffiti and how this artistic expression appeared in Bucharest's public space in the 1990s.

How does the experience unfold?

The graffiti and mural art tour starts in front of the KFC restaurant in Piața Romană. The location was not chosen at random, because, as you will discover during the tour, the Piața Romană metro station is closely linked to the history of the graffiti movement. Banned as an artistic expression during the communist era, graffiti made its appearance on the streets of the capital in the early 1990s. After a brief overview of the different forms of graffiti, we will begin a walking tour in search of the most famous and representative examples present in the city today, created by both Romanian and foreign graffiti artists. 

While the graffiti movement involves adrenaline and the more or less artistic modification of public space in an illegal manner, mural art contrasts with its legal side, having all the necessary approvals obtained in advance. Thus, no longer having the constraint of finishing the work as quickly as possible in order not to get caught, we can enjoy works of various sizes, from the smallest to murals that occupy the entire facade of 10-story buildings.

We will explore together the works that have appeared in recent years in the Icoana area and see what the Street Delivery festival has meant for the evolution of street art. After discovering one of the most beautiful bookstores in Bucharest and its role in supporting artists, we will make a short stop near Revolution Square to discuss the Memorial located in its center and its significance. This is because shortly afterwards we will find a representation of the Memorial in another format, included in a mural. 

Along the way, we will also address topics such as graffiti and its position between art and vandalism, we will have discussions about how murals are made, and we will discover why some works are preserved over the years, while others are covered with tags shortly after completion.

The tour will end near Cișmigiu Park, in a bohemian, alternative place where street art has brought color to the surrounding walls in recent years.

The tour will be entirely on foot, lasting approximately 2.5 hours, and can be organized in Romanian or English.
